Minerva is a town in Carroll County , Columbiana County and Stark County in the US state of Ohio. The population was 3,934 at the 2000 census.
Geography and traffic
Minerva was on the Great Trail , a route that the Native Americans had created between the Great Lakes area and the later New England states on the Atlantic coast. Although the Great Trail was later often referred to as the "War Trail," it was primarily a trade route. Instead of the Great Trail, Ohio State Route 183 (SR-183), which branches off from US Highway 30 in Minerva , runs through Carroll County to Malvern . There is a "historic marker" on the Great Trail at the intersection of Linden Road and SR-183 to the west of Minerva.
French troops who fled the approaching British in 1755 or 1758 are said to have buried a treasure along the trail in what is now the Minerva area. The treasure was never found, but today the Festival of the French Lost Gold is celebrated annually in Minerva.

The first land in the area was given to Issac Craig in 1813 in 1813. John Whitacre, a surveyor who lived in Columbiana County, saw the opportunity to build a mill with a water wheel at a waterfall in Little Sandy Creek . In 1818 Whitacre bought the 50 acre area on Little Sandy Creek, which later became part of the Sandy Beaver Canal , and built the mill that same year. The city was named after John Whitacre's niece, Minerva Ann Taylor. The log cabin in which Minerva Ann was born is still standing today and stands near the place where the mill was once built.
The first schoolhouse was built in 1846. After the Sandy Beaver Canal lost its importance in the 1840s, the railroad came to Minerva as the main means of transport. In 1868 a railway line to Minerva was built from Pennsylvania. The brothers Willard and Issac Pennock made the first railroad car that was actually made of iron and were granted a patent for it.

- William McKinley (1843–1901), 25th President of the United States, spent most of the summer months on McKinley Farm, a few miles east of Minerva.
