Minija (formerly also Mingė or Minė, German Minge ) is a place in the Memel Delta in Lithuania . It belongs to the district of Kintai in šilutė district municipality .

History and description

View of Minija
Minge's plan on a wooden board in German and Lithuanian.

The place consists of a row of houses on either side of the Minija river , so that it was previously considered the main artery of the place: "The children came to school by boat, the doctor to the sick and the men to the jug."

Since 1736 there was a school in Minge. The fisheries police system was reorganized in 1844, and so Minge was given a fish master who was responsible for the fishermen's schools and the local fishing police in the Feilenhof district . The Minge spa pennant is divided diagonally from bottom left to top right. The colors are red (top left) and white (bottom right).

Even today there is no bridge over the river in Minija, but the tourist title as “Venice among the Delta Villages” is far exaggerated - today, mainly tourists are transported by boat. The place itself presents itself as a small port or marina . In a few minutes you can reach both the lagoon and the westernmost main arm of the Memel Delta. The King Wilhelm Canal , which was built by the Minija to the Klaipėdas port in 1863–73 , is no longer in operation today.
