Minus 8 (born March 25, 1967 in Zurich ; real name Robert Jan Meyer ) is an electronica DJ .

life and work

Robert Jan Meyer began his career in the 1980s as a bassist in a funk band , but soon discovered his passion for electronic music and experimented with keyboards and samplers . At the beginning of the 1990s he began to work as a DJ under the name "Minus 8".

In the early days, musical styles such as rare groove , acid jazz and hip-hop were predominant, but subsequently switched to drum and bass , nu jazz and new latin beats. His first release was in 1996 the maxi single "Airborn" with the voice of Tanya Birri, which could be heard repeatedly on his following albums. In the same year the EP "The Sweetest Sounds" was released on Inflamable Records, the label of the French musician DJ Cam, on which his first album Beyond was also released the following year. His second album Beyond Beyond appeared on Higher Ground, an English label, from Sony (UK) was expelled. The Swiss label Jaboo, which already brought out “Airborn” and Beyond , and Compost from Munich subsequently released their albums Elysian Fields (2000) and Minuit (2002) at the same time .

In addition to his work as a DJ, he also composed the soundtrack for Viktor Vogel - Commercial Man by Lars Kraume (2001) and left his piece “Snowblind” to Apple for a worldwide commercial for the G4 PowerBook Titanium (2001).

From 1996 to 2010 he put together the (initially) annual compilation series Science Fiction Jazz for the German label Mole Listening Pearls , as well as the Batacuda Vol. 1–3 (from 2000) , which are more oriented towards Latin American sounds .
