Million (abbreviation million , Mill. ) Is a numerical word and denotes the number 1,000,000 = 10 6 .

Linguistic

The number word million comes from Italian . It is made up of the numeral mille , which is also Latin, for "thousand" and the suffix -one , which means "great thousand". It came from Italian as a loan word in many European languages.

The million is a noun in German and is declined accordingly, for information with fractions over a million or information with decimal places, finally for all numbers from 2,000,000 so in the plural: half a million, one million, 0.8 million, one and a half Millions, two million etc. As an ordinal number , however, it is always written together: the (one) millionth, two millionth, etc. B. for 1,204,613 "one million two hundred four thousand six hundred thirteen".

According to DIN 5008 , the million is abbreviated to million . German language dictionaries also know Mill. As shorthand, but a likelihood of confusion with the reading billion is, as its abbreviated billion not all readers may be familiar. In the metric system is the Greek prefix mega (from the Greek. Μέγας Megas "large") for the millions of value, the prefix micro- (v. Greek. Gr. Μικρός, microphones "small") for a millionth.

Colloquially, million is also abbreviated as mille . This is what the rapper Casper called his thank you song for 500,000 Facebook fans Halbe Mille .

Since the (ancient) Greek language has a simple word for “ten thousand” (μύριοι, myriad ), the numerical word for the million is formed as “one hundred times ten thousand”, Greek εκατομμύριο ( ekatommýrio ). The same applies to the Chinese number system and the number systems derived from it in East Asia. In India , the Hindi words Lakh for 100,000 and Crore for 10 million are also used in English instead of million and billion . Accordingly, one does not write 200,805,300, but 20,08,05,300 (twenty crore eight lakh five thousand three hundred).

Unit of measure prefixes

When referring to units of measurement , the million times the unit of measurement is designated with the prefix Mega (abbreviated: M), whereas the millionth part (10 −6 ) is denoted by micro (abbreviated: μ). For example, a micrometer (μm) is a millionth of a meter (10 −6  m).

When referring to the unit of measurement byte in computer science, the term megabyte (MB) is now understood to mean exactly one million bytes. That is 10 6 bytes and not 2 20 = 1 048 576 bytes, which exceeds a million bytes by almost 5%. The designation Mebibyte (abbreviated: MiB) is suggested for naming 2 20 bytes ; Mebi (Mi) is a binary prefix while Mega (M) is a decimal prefix.

Math

  • 1 million = 1,000,000 = 10 6 ; the million is therefore a power of ten (number of steps) with the exponent 6.
  • 1 million = 1000 x 1000 = 1000 2 ; so the million is a square number .
  • 1 million = 100 x 100 x 100 = 100 3 ; so the million is also a cube number .
  • 1 million is an even number.

So one calls z. E.g. the number 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 = 10 6 3 = 1 000 000 3 one trillion and the number 10 51 = 10 6 8.5 = 1 000 000 8.5 one octilliard.
