Miró the elder
Miró the Elder , also called Miró I in dynastic continuity ( Catalan Miró el Vell ; † 896 ), was a Count of Conflent and Rosselló from the House of Barcelona . He was one of the sons of Sunifred I and a younger brother of Wilfried I the Hairy , the founder of the Catalan ruling dynasty.
Together with his brother, Miró took control of most of the counties of the Spanish march from 870 , whereby he was able to establish himself in Conflent at the latest in 873 . Here he and his brother founded the Abbey of Santa Maria de Formiguera on September 23 of this year. Probably after the fall of Bernhard von Gothien , he was also able to take over Roussillon ( Rosselló in Catalan ). He had apparently been able to raise an inheritance claim to these areas, as he is named in a document from the year 879 as the successor to his grandfather Bello of Carcassonne , who was probably his mother's father. In any case, Miró received the recognition of King Charles the Bald , who in 871, presumably at the Synod of Douzy , gave him hereditary patronage over the Abbey of Sant Miquel de Cuixà .
When he died, Conflent was taken over by his brother Wilfried or directly by his son Miró the Younger . Rosselló, however, fell to the count family of Empúries , who were probably cousins of the Bellonid clan . The wife of Count Bencion of Empúries named Gotlana, mentioned in 916, was probably a daughter of Miró.
