- February 22nd : The East Franconian King Arnulf becomes Emperor in Rome . For a short time and for the last time in history, he united the parts of the Frankish Empire under one reign.
- Boniface VI. is informally appointed Pope . With 15 days he has the third shortest pontificate in history. 896 is a three-papal year. Stephan VI. follows him as the new Pope.
- In the summer of 896 the Bulgarians, led by Tsar Simeon I , defeated the troops from Byzantium in the Battle of Bulgarophygon .
