Rodulfus (Vermandois)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rodulfus (French: Raoul ; † June 28, 896 ) was a count in the Vermandois from the House of Flanders . He was a son of Count Baldwin I Eisenarm von Flanders and Judith, a daughter of Emperor Charles the Bald .

With the support of his older brother, Count Baldwin II of Flanders , Rodulfus conquered the castle of Saint-Quentin in 895 and also seized the castle of Péronne , making him the most powerful man in the Vermandois. With King Odo he immediately got into a dispute over the power of disposal over the abbey of Saint-Quentin , which led to his non-recognition as count by the king. In the following year Rodulfus was attacked by Count Heribert I and killed in battle, after which the Vermandois fell permanently to his family.

Rodulfus' death was later avenged by his brother Baldwin II of Flanders, who murdered Count Heribert I.

Rodulfus / Raoul is sometimes referred to in recent historical literature as "Count of Cambrai", which, however, results from his confusion with the son of Raoul de Gouy ( First House of Valois ) by the chronicler Flodoard von Reims , who was a hero in the 13th century Chanson de geste ("Raoul de Cambrai") has entered French poetry.

Allegedly he was the father-in-law of Count Isaac of Cambrai , but this cannot be proven by any source.
