Rudolf I (Vexin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf I von Gouy (French: Raoul de Gouy ; lat .: Rodulfi de Gaugeio ; † 926 ) was a count of Ostrevant , Vexin , Amiens and Valois from the first House of Valois in the 10th century.

Rudolf is mentioned for the first time in 915 in a royal diploma to the Saint-Clément monastery in Compiègne , and the following year he becomes King Charles III's entourage . of the simple- minded called in Herstal . At Flodoard , Rudolf is named as a follower of the dux Hugo Magnus in 925 , when he sealed a contract with the Normans . He called him Rodulfi de Gaugeio , probably based on the place Gouy-sous-Bellonne (today in the Pas-de-Calais department ) in the historic Ostrevant landscape. He was probably involved in the battles against the Normans, which had crossed northern France since 923. It is possible that Rudolf was a son of Count Hucbald von Ostrevant and the Heilwig von Friuli, in any case he is also named by Flodoard as filius Heilwidis on the occasion of his death in 926 . His stepfather was probably Count Roger I of Laon , to whom he left Ostrevant.

Rudolf was probably with a daughter of King Charles III. The simple-minded was married, his son Rudolf II is named by Alberich von Trois-Fontaines as a nepos of King Ludwig IV of the Overseas . An assumed second marriage with Eldegarde, a daughter of his predecessor Ermenfroi († around 923) with whom he had a possible second son named Walter I , cannot be supported by contemporary sources.

In the chanson de geste "Raoul de Cambrai", written in the 12th century , Rudolf von Gouy appears as the father of the title hero under the name "Raoul Taillefer". His wife is called "Aalais" (Aélis), daughter of King Charles the Simple. It should be noted that the chanson makes no claim to historical correctness.
