- August 12th : The Japanese Tennō Uda renounces the throne and retires to the Ninna-ji temple that he built . He is followed by his son Daigo as Tennō .

- Synod of bodies in Rome : Pope Stephan VI. has the body of his predecessor Formosus exhumed and tried for alleged abuses.
- August: Stephan VI. is deposed and strangled in the dungeon. His successor is Romanus , who dies in November. His successor Theodor II is only in office for 20 days, but has at least time to overturn the judgment of the synod of corpses and to ensure that Formosus is buried properly.
