Mircea Simon

Mircea Simon (born June 22, 1954 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian boxer . Simon was a silver medalist at the 1976 Olympic Games and a two-time bronze medalist at the European Championships .

Career

amateur

Simon was four times Romanian champion, 1974 in the light heavyweight (-81 kg) and 1975–1977 in the heavyweight division (+81 kg).

1974 Simon won the silver medal at the Police Championships de Warsaw Pact States . The following year he won bronze at the European Championships , losing in the semifinals to Andrzej Biegalski, Poland (KO 2nd).

At the 1976 Olympic Games , Simon reached the final after defeating Trevor Berbick , Jamaica (5: 0), Atanas Suvandzhiev, Bulgaria (4: 1), and Clarence Hill , Bahamas (5: 0), the final, which he beat Teófilo Stevenson , Cuba (AB 3rd), lost and thereby won the Olympic silver medal.

In 1977 Simon won the bronze medal at the European Championships as he had done two years earlier, losing in the semifinals to Evgeni Gorstkov, Soviet Union (5-0). The following year he won the silver medal at the Warsaw Pact Police Championships and then ended his career.

professional

In 1978, Simon was with the Romanian national team at the training camp in Lake Tahoe , Nevada , and applied for asylum to the local authorities. After this application was accepted, he moved to Laguna Beach , California , and went into the professional business under manager and trainer Jackie McCoy. He made his professional debut on March 18, 1978 with a points victory over Rocky Jones. He remained undefeated for the next seven fights before drawing a tie with Eddie Lopez. Another four wins later he met Leroy Caldwell in September 1979, against whom he lost on points after ten rounds and then ended his career.
