On the former Sudanese west bank of the Nile was the place Mirgissa ( ancient Egyptian Iqen ). In the immediate vicinity was in the Middle Kingdom under Sesostris III. an ancient Egyptian fortress was built to secure the border with Nubia . Since the completion of the Aswan Dam , the former west bank has been flooded by Lake Nubia .
The fortress, about 334 kilometers south of Aswan , was in the area of the second Nile cataract and, with a size of about 4 hectares (40,000 m² ), was the largest of the eleven Nubian border fortresses.
