Miriam Cooper (born November 7, 1891 in Baltimore , Maryland , † April 12, 1976 in Charlottesville , Virginia ) was an American actress .

Life

Miriam Cooper was one of five children of a Roman Catholic family. The father left the family and went to Europe. The mother initially received support from the mother-in-law, after whose death the fatherless family lived in deep poverty. Miriam Cooper had to live in an orphanage for a time and was eventually brought up in a boarding school by nuns. After school, the 1.47 m tall girl earned her living as a model and played her first small role in a film under the direction of the legendary DW Griffith in 1911. She then went to Florida, where she made more than 30 films for Kalem Studios . In 1914 she rediscovered Griffith and gave her the lead roles in his classics The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance . During filming, she fell in love with Griffith Raoul Walsh's assistant and married him in 1916.

After her wedding, she only made a few films under the direction of her husband. The wish to become a mother remained unfulfilled. Eventually the couple adopted two boys. However, the marriage ended in divorce in 1925 due to Raoul Walsh's constant infidelity. Miriam Cooper never made another movie and never married again. In the last years of her life she was rediscovered and took part in several silent film festivals and gave numerous interviews.
