The couple had their daughter Phöbe Ungerer (born May 24, 1961).
In 1972 she married the novelist Wilfred Sheed (December 27, 1930 - January 19, 2011), nominated for the National Book Award . The couple first lived in Sag Harbor (New York) and then in North Haven on Long Iceland in New York State . After her husband died, she moved to Great Barrington to be closer to her daughter.
