Miriam Ungerer

Miriam Ungerer (born Miriam Lancaster , married Miriam Strandquest (1st marriage) and Miriam Ungerer-Sheed (3rd marriage), born September 15, 1928 in Spartanburg ; † June 4, 2015 in Great Barrington , Massachusetts ) was an author, who specialized in cookbooks and worked as a food journalist.

Life

Her parents were George and Marguerite Combahee Lancaster. At a young age, she began a lifelong “culinary journey” that took her to various kitchens in the USA and Europe . For a long time, starting on August 7, 1969, she wrote the column "Long Island Larder" (German Long Island Pantry ) for "The East Hampton Star". The column continued until December 2005. Her recipes and cooking skills met with a public response.

At the age of 18 she married her first husband, Duane Strandquest, who worked for the US Air Force ; the couple lived in Florida , Texas , Wiesbaden and Erding . The daughters Dominique Michelle and Pamela Strandquest emerged from the marriage. In her second marriage she married the graphic artist and writer Tomi Ungerer , with whom she lived in Manhattan ; there she ran a "design research business". The couple had their daughter Phöbe Ungerer (born May 24, 1961).

In 1972 she married the novelist Wilfred Sheed (December 27, 1930 - January 19, 2011), nominated for the National Book Award . The couple first lived in Sag Harbor (New York) and then in North Haven on Long Iceland in New York State . After her husband died, she moved to Great Barrington to be closer to her daughter.

According to her daughter, she died of a stroke in her home while she was preparing a clam dish for the family.
