The mission cross next to the parish church

The mission cross Nörvenich is on the east side of the parish church St. Medardus in Nörvenich , Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The first ascertainable mission for the parish of Nörvenich was carried out in 1770. In his notes from 1770 to 1789, Reiner Badenheuer, Müller from Nörvenich , wrote:

“In 1770 the Fathers Missionaries were here at Nörvenich on the 28th of June, the 29th ditto is the First Sermon to Peter Pauli, that was then on the ftry day, and they stayed here until the 25th of July, there they are gone, after that they are after Keltz Come that Missions Creutz on the church yard. I did Reinero Badenhewer and Peter Lux, and I also crossed it out, the fathers were named Peter müllenweg, pater schumacher and pater Beuten. "

The miller Reiner Badenheuer was 31 years old at the time, he is said to have been a very skilled craftsman, especially in dealing with wood. Peter Lux was only 16 years old. His father's name was also Peter, and both were joiners. It is no longer possible to determine who made the cross among them.

After the completion of such mission weeks, a cross was set up as described above by Reiner Badenheuer. After that, penitential processions went there for a long time or people gathered for penitential services .

It can no longer be said whether the structure at the church was designed as early as 1770 as it can be seen today and as it is still remembered by the older residents. The cross stands under the protective roof that is still in place. It had a wood-carved body of Christ and the also wood-carved late Gothic figures of Maria and John, which stood on consoles , the lower end of which was formed by angel heads . The two figures were Rhenish carvings from around 1470/80. When and how these works of art came to Nörvenich and were put together for this impressive crucifixion group can no longer be determined.

The statues, which are over 500 years old, have been lost for 35 years. In 2016 the parish replaced the corpus and the two figures with replicas .

On the cross and on the tiles below are the following inscriptions :
