Günter Katzenberger (born May 25, 1937 in Bad Kissingen ) is a German musician , musicologist , conductor , high school and university teacher , professor of historical musicology at the University of Music, Theater and Media in Hanover as well as non-fiction author and editor .

Günter Katzenberger first studied school music in Munich at the University of Music and Theater there (with a subsequent legal clerkship ) as well as musicology, philosophy and modern history. He then studied with Professors Wilhelm Fischer , Erich Valentin and Hans Zingerle in Innsbruck at the university there , where he received his doctorate in historical musicology and passed his concert qualification examination in conducting.

From 1963 Katzenberger taught at various grammar schools in Munich and Mühldorf am Inn , giving concerts as a chamber musician, lied accompanist and orchestra conductor.

From 1970 Günter Katzenberger taught at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media (HMTM Hanover), where he was appointed Professor of Historical Musicology in 1973 - in combination with music education - and at the same time held teaching positions at the University of Hildesheim and the University of Bremen . In 1976 he also took on an honorary professorship in the field of musicology at Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover .

Until his retirement in 2002, Katzenberger headed the Hanoverian Artists' Association as its chairman for many years and was also deputy chairman of the Hanoverian Society for New Music .

In addition to various contributions in the encyclopedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG) and in the work Das Handel-Lexikon , Günter Katzenberger published numerous writings.
