With all my might is a Franco-Belgian feature film by Nils Tavernier . Based on a true story (the " Team Hoyt " - Dick Hoyt with his son Rick - at the Ironman Hawaii ) the story of a disabled youth is told who does a triathlon with his father .

action

Paul Amblard, who has been repairing cable cars since then, becomes unemployed. He couldn't get over the disappointment that his now 17-year-old son Julien was born disabled, and even now he doesn't care about him. Instead, he does sports or is active in the fire brigade. Relations with his wife Claire are also strained. Julien suffers from his father's disregard. In the garage he finds old newspaper clippings from his father's participation in an Ironman triathlon. After coming across an American father on the Internet who did an Ironman with his disabled son, he confronted his father with the same wish. He refuses, as this is too dangerous and he no longer has the necessary fitness. In frustration, Julien runs away from home in his electric wheelchair. At a gas station there is an argument with his father who wants to bring him back home.

Only when Julien's classmates ask her father to grant him his wish does the father turn. He is converting a bike that Julien can sit in front of the handlebars. They train together in the local mountains; even a fall does not prevent them from pursuing the goal. The mother, however, is strictly against participating in Ironman France , in which the two have registered. Her daughter can calm her down a little. Julien, who no longer wants to be treated like a child by his mother, leaves her with the message "This is my life" in the hairdressing salon where she works. The family and friends celebrate Julien's 18th birthday in a harmonious atmosphere in a restaurant and a fireworks display in front of their mountain hut. One day the organizers of the Ironman get a rejection. Julien takes the train to Nice with his friend Yohan, where he gains access to the organizing committee, which subsequently gives him permission to start. Paul now has doubts again, but is now encouraged by Claire to resume training. He is now training in a mountain lake to pull a boat while swimming and is working intensively on his stamina. A special seat for the bicycle is made for Julien.

After all, the whole family goes to the competition in Nice. Father and son are at the end of the field after the swim, but with the help of Julien, the schedule can initially be adhered to in order to reach the limit of 16 hours. Then Julien gets a sore hip while cycling. This is taken care of when switching to running, and the doctor allows the competition to continue. Towards the end, Paul becomes weaker and weaker and he finally wants to give up not far from the goal. Julien doesn't want to accept that and starts to move the wheelchair himself with his hands. This motivates the father to mobilize his strength again. Three minutes before the end of the deadline, the two of them reached their destination, cheered.

Reviews

“Unfortunately, the dramaturgy follows the familiar paths of the sports film genre: First, there is training for the major event until the rind cracks, then there is a setback before the finish, and at the end everyone is happily in each other's arms. But big surprises are not to be expected from films of this kind. What matters is the passion of the story. And that leaves no one untouched. "

"Nils Tavernier [...] also succeeds in skillfully combining many small subplots [...] The balancing act between exertion, difficulties and the euphoric 'perfect world' does not always succeed, but it is in the genre of sports film, which one adapts to at least during the race this is a recurring danger.
