The mitochondrial phosphate transporter (PiC, PTP) is the protein in the mitochondrial membrane of the eukaryotes that catalyzes the transport of phosphate ions from the cytosol into the mitochondria . It is part of the respiratory chain and belongs to the mitochondrial carriers . The transport equation is:
- Phosphate (outside) + H + (outside) ⇒ phosphate (inside) + H + (inside)
Mutations in the SLC25A3 - gene are the cause of a rare genetic disease in which the newborn within one year of cardiomyopathies die and acidification. PiC presumably also plays the main role in the development of reperfusion damage after ischemia .
