Mixia osmundae is a type of mushroom (Basidiomycota) thatparasitizeson king ferns ( Osmunda ). The species alone forms the class Mixiomycetes .
Features and way of life
Mixia osmundae is dimorphic, i.e. it grows like a yeast and with hyphae . The spores are ejected, but it has not been clarified whether they are meio- or mitospores. The hyphae are polynuclear and have few septa .
In the host tissue, the hyphae grow along the host's cell surface, the host cell walls are thickened in the contact area. Under the cuticle of the upper and lower surface of the leaf, the hyphae form large, sac-like swellings. From these sporogenic cells grow up. The numerous spores are formed exogenously, simultaneously and enteroblastically.
Systematics
The Mixiomycetes are the sister group of the Agaricostilbomycetes within the Pucciniomycotina . They only comprise an order with a single species:
- Mixiomycetes
- Mixiales
- Mixiaceae
-
Mixia
- Mixia osmundae
-
Mixia
- Mixiaceae
- Mixiales
The species was counted as a hose fungus until the 1990s . Within the Pucciniomycotina they are isolated and are not closely related to any group.
