Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury ( Bengali : মিজনুর রহমান চৌধুরী , Mijanur Rahmān Caudhurī ; born October 19, 1928 , † February 2, 2006 in Dhaka ) was a politician from Bangladesh . From July 9, 1986 to March 27, 1988 he was Prime Minister of his country.

Chowdhury was born in the Chandpur district of what is now Bangladesh. He has been politically active since college. As a member of the Awami League , he was elected to the Pakistani parliament for the first time in 1962 - the area of ​​Bangladesh was then part of Pakistan. When Mujibur Rahman and other leaders of the Awami League were arrested in 1966, Chowdhury was acting general secretary of his party until he was finally arrested himself in 1967. After his release he was active in the Bengali independence movement of the early 1970s. Chowdhury has been a Member of Parliament for a long time since Bangladesh gained independence. From 1973 he was Minister of Information in Mujibur Rahman's cabinet. After his assassination in 1975, he resigned from this office and led a splinter group of the Awami League.

In the early 1980s, Chowdhury supported the takeover of power by Hossain Mohammad Ershad and became a member of his Jatiya Party in 1984 . During Ershad's presidency, Chowdhury was Prime Minister of Bangladesh for two years from 1986 to 1988.

Chowdhury became a member of the Awami League again in 2001 and worked as a political advisor until his death.
