Modern was a band of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) from Lübeck, which was active between 1982 and 1984 and celebrated its greatest success with the song Im Himmel ist Jahrmarkt .

history

In 1982 bassist Wolfgang Mielbrett founded the band Modern with musicians from Hamburg and Lübeck and tried to become part of the successful Neue Deutsche Welle with humorous German lyrics, which had its commercial peak in the early 80s. Through local appearances, the band got to know Kuno Dreysse, who at the time was managing director of the Star Club and was active in the music business and brokered Modern for a record company.

In the same year the band recorded their album Dezente Tendenzen in the "Delta Studio" in Wilster , in which Lou Reed recorded his much-acclaimed album The Bells . Responsible for the high quality sound of the album was the producer Karl "Charly" Steinberg , who two years later founded Steinberg Media Technologies and developed Cubase, one of the most successful programs for audio processing.

In the period that followed, Modern appeared with Extrabreit  and Lilli Berlin  , among others  , but could not make it into the German charts with their LP. In 1983 the record company switched to Polydor and the band's most famous song, Im Himmel ist Jahrmarkt , was created. Due to the delayed promotion, the hit, which was believed to be safe, ebbed in the final phase of the Neue Deutsche Welle, whereupon the follow-up single, Piraten der Sehnsucht , no longer gained any media attention and the band broke up in 1984.

In the following years Mielbrett, Miklis and the rest of the band went their separate ways.
