The Vienna Fashion School in Schloss Hetzendorf is a training institution of the municipality of Vienna .

history

The forerunner was the “ Wiener Frauenakademie ”, which was founded in 1897 as an “art school for women and girls”, who at that time were still denied access to the art academies. The school's purpose was downgraded to that of a fashion school during the Nazi era. Since the school building, which was located in the 3rd district in Siegelgasse, was bombed out towards the end of the Second World War, the institution relocated to Hetzendorf Castle under the new name “Fashion School of the City of Vienna”.

The school was re-established in October 1946 and is housed in the Hetzendorf Castle in Vienna- Meidling , Hetzendorfer Strasse 79, which is owned by the City of Vienna . Although it is under the control of the city (MA 13), it is technically a private school (with public rights) according to. Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the Federal Act of 25 July 1962 on Private Schools (Private Schools Act).

Training

Until the 1995/96 school year, the fashion school was run as a technical school without a high school diploma. From the 1996/97 school year, the Federal Ministry of Education approved the conduct of the school experiment “Higher educational institution for fashion design and product design” (higher educational institution with high school diploma). In 2000 the last class graduated from technical school. The school trial for a higher education institution comprises a five-year vocational training with a focus on "fashion design-clothing-making", "fashion design-knitwear", "model leather goods", "model millinery" and "textile design" with a final maturity examination. A minimum age of 14 and a maximum of 20 years is required for admission. From the 2006/07 school year, there will also be a six-semester “Bachelor's degree in fashion” in cooperation with the University of Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz (Art University Linz). This bachelor's degree is intended to enable an EU-wide recognized university degree (“Bachelor of Arts”).
