population

With 73 inhabitants per square kilometer, Mogovolas has a high population density for Mozambique. As in many districts, the population is very young, 16.2 percent of the population are under five years old.

The graph above shows the number of people by age in the years 2009 to 2014. The height of the bars shows how the number of people under 10 has risen sharply in the last five years. The age structure of the population shows an economic dependency ratio of 10:13, that is, for every ten children or older people there are thirteen people of working age.

While there are almost forty percent Muslims in the province of Nampula, in Mogovolas it is around a quarter, whereas the number of Christians in the district is significantly higher.

The predominant language is Makua . 86 percent of the population over the age of five do not speak Portuguese.

Agriculture, forestry, hunting

Basic foods are grown on 69,000 farms. There is only one large farm with a cultivation area of 884 hectares, the average farm size is 1.1 hectares. The main crops are corn, cassava , beans, peanuts and sweet potatoes . There are also a variety of fruit trees, coconut palms and cashew trees . Domestic animals are also kept in some areas, mainly chickens, ducks and goats for personal use, as well as oxen, goats, pigs and sheep for marketing. In addition to droughts and pests, inadequacies in seeds are a major obstacle to production. International programs help farmers improve their seeds.

The total area of the forest is 72,000 hectares. On the one hand, wood is used as a building material and is the most frequently used energy source as firewood. Selling wood and charcoal is an important additional source of income. Illegal deforestation and uncontrolled fires endanger the forest.

Hunting is a dietary supplement for many families. The main wild animals are wild boars, rabbits and gazelles.

Natural resources

No natural resources are mined in the district.

traffic

The Mogovolas district has mainly regional road connections. Most likely to be highlighted are the main roads that connect Nametil with the provincial capital Nampula and with Murrupula (via Iulúti).
