Moma is a district in the Mozambican province of Nampula with the capital Moma . The district is located in the southwest of the province, it borders in the north with the district Mogovolas , in the west with the province Zambezia , in the south with the Indian Ocean and in the east with the district Angoche .

Moma has an area of ​​5,814 square kilometers and 349,864 inhabitants (as of 2013). This results in a population density of 60 inhabitants per square kilometer. The district is climatically part of the coastal strip with a rather dry climate. The average annual rainfall is 800 to 1,000 millimeters.

Like many districts in Mozambique, Moma has a young population: Eighteen percent of the population are younger than five years, 26 percent are between 15 and 64 years old and only 3 percent are 65 years or older (as of 2014).

In contrast to the province, there are only 29 percent Catholics in Moma (39 percent in the province of Nampula), but a high proportion of people who do not profess any religion.

Facilities and services

There are 181 primary schools ( Primárias) in the district , of which 138 are public schools and 43 are private schools. Of the nine secondary schools (Secundárias) all are public (as of 2013).

With 85 students per teacher in primary schools, Moma is well above the Nampula province average. In secondary schools, the district with 30 students per teacher is in the provincial average.

As in many districts in Mozambique, illiteracy is particularly high among older women. Among 15 to 19 year olds, 48 ​​percent of boys but 72 percent of girls cannot read and write, among over 60 year olds it is 73 percent of men and 96 percent of women.

Economy and Infrastructure

The average dwelling in the district is a hut with a ground floor, reed or wood walls, and a thatched roof. One in two of the average families has a radio and a bicycle, none of them have an electricity connection, and none have a car. Almost no house has a drinking water connection or a sewer connection, almost 90 percent draw their water from a well.

Agriculture

Basic foodstuffs are grown in 66,000 farms on a total area of ​​95,000 hectares. This corresponds to an average size of 1.4 hectares per farm (as of 2010). Almost 95 percent of the companies are family-owned. Several family members usually work in the small family businesses, often children under ten years of age. In addition to tractors, draft animals are also used here. The irregular and below-average rainfall often leads to poor harvests.

Mainly maize , cassava , beans , peanuts and sweet potatoes are grown , along with fruit trees , coconut palms and cashew trees . Around 6,000 farms also keep 72,000 chickens.

Fishing is an important source of income on the coast, rivers and lakes.

Natural resources

Moma has the world's largest titanium mineral deposit. The mine contains the titanium minerals ilmenite , rutile and zircon . Titanium dioxide is extracted from this on site . This is used in the manufacture of paints to increase the hiding power. The minerals are extracted by dredging. In 2011, reserves of around 26 million tons of ilmenite, 1.8 million tons of zircon and 0.55 million tons of rutile were identified. In the same year, 842,900 tons of heavy mineral concentrate were produced on site. Since the mine is close to the coast, the finished products are transported to the coast on a 2.4 km long overland conveyor system and loaded onto ships there.

The Moma district has mainly regional road links that connect the city of Moma with the other cities in the district, as well as with the provincial capital Nampula . There is also local shipping traffic on the coast.
