Mohammad Sarwar

Mohammad Sarwar (* 18th August 1952 in Pirmahal , Pakistan ) is a British politician of the Labor Party and was from 1997 to 2010 deputy in the British Parliament for Glasgow Central . He was the first Muslim MP in the UK.

Sarwar graduated from Faisalabad University . He was elected to the House of Commons in the UK general election in 1997 . He was the first MP there to take the oath of allegiance ( Oath of Allegiance ) on the Koran after this practice was legitimized by the Oath Act of 1978.

On June 21, 2007, Sarwar announced that he would no longer run for the 2010 British general election . His son Anas Sarwar succeeded him as MP for Glasgow.
