Life

Abdullah was a Muslim , he worked as a journalist and specialist consultant for Islam in the interreligious field. Among other things, he contributed to the development of the curriculum for Islamic religious instruction in North Rhine-Westphalia and was jointly responsible for the theological training of Turkish teachers / moderators at the North Rhine-Westphalian State Institute for Schools and Further Education. He was also an employee of Deutsche Welle (Islam division) and editor-in-chief of the “Muslim Review”, the “Islam Echo” news service and the historical study series “ZeitZeichen”.

Abdullah was a co-founder of the Christian Islamic Society in 1982 . On the occasion of his 75th birthday, a working biography was published under the title “Bridge Builders - Genesis of the Dialogue of the Abraham Serbs in Germany”.

Abdullah was a member of the Islamic World Congress , for many years a member of the Executive Council of the Congress, represented the Congress at the United Nations and most recently was one of its Vice-Presidents.

Together with Adel Theodor Khoury , he was the editor of a translation of the Koran into German , which is used today for citation in German publications by Saudi Arabian institutions; in Iran this translation of the Koran received an award in 2009.

Although controversial in certain Islamic organizations in the Federal Republic, Muhammad Salim Abdullah could for a long time be regarded as one of the leading representatives of Islam in Germany, both in terms of commitment and public perception. Two assassinations were carried out on him during his tenure in the World Islamic Congress. After a death threat from the Turkish extremist Metin Kaplan , his family was under police protection for years.
