Moltkedenkmal in Düsseldorf (1906)

The Moltke monument in Düsseldorf was created by the Düsseldorf sculptors Josef Tüshaus and Joseph Hammerschmidt and unveiled on November 27, 1901. It is one of many Moltke monuments that were erected in various places in the German Empire in memory of the Prussian Field Marshal Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke .

history

The Moltke monument in Düsseldorf stood at the southern end of today's Heinrich-Heine-Allee (today Heinrich-Heine-Platz), in front of the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus and initially in front of the Kymly's office building , which a few years later was replaced by the Carsch-Haus was replaced. During the Second World War, the memorial was badly damaged by the air raid on November 3, 1943, but the group of figures Schmied mit Knabe von Hammerschmidt, which adorned the base of the memorial, was preserved. The damaged monument had to make way for the street redesign in front of the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus and the newly created parking lots there between 1947 and 1949. According to the design by the architect Jörg Metz, the group of figures that have been preserved was re-erected in 1994 on Martin-Luther-Platz in front of the Johanneskirche and inaugurated on December 10th of that year. Here, the relic of the Moltke memorial , together with the Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm memorials, again forms the original Wilhelmine “sculpture trilogy”.

description

Moltkedenkmal around 1900 at the old location on Heinrich-Heine-Allee, then still Alleestrasse

The bronze sculpture by Josef Tüshaus represented the Prussian Field Marshal von Moltke; it "shows [e] the battle thinker full of truth in life in old age".

The figures by Joseph Hammerschmidt flanking the pedestal were intended to represent "' carriage and weighing ', the exultant enthusiasm of the warriors and the urgent reminder to Germany's youth". The figure on one side of the plinth represented a cheering warrior; on the other side of the plinth was a group of figures showing an "old veteran " telling his grandson about the "war acts of the great strategist". This group of figures, blacksmith with boy , survived the Second World War and is now on Martin-Luther-Platz. The board integrated into the cross-shaped base says:

The group of figures "Blacksmith with boy", created in 1901 by J. Hammerschmidt, is a relic of the whey monument that stood on Heinrich-Heine-Allee. "Jong, jangk en de Aldestadt on get mech fönef Alt." The vernacular derives this anecdotal expression of the blacksmith from the way he holds his fingers.
The cross shape of the base is intended to commemorate the destruction of the monument and the victims of the war.
