The Schmalkalden – Kleinschmalkalden railway was a branch line in Thuringia . It connected Schmalkalden and Kleinschmalkalden south of the Thuringian Forest .
history
On November 3, 1892, the section from Schmalkalden to Floh-Seligenthal was opened, one year later, on November 6, the section from Floh-Seligenthal to Kleinschmalkalden. Trains mostly ran from Schmalkalden to Brotterode , there was a joint operation with the adjoining circular railway.
On October 30, 1996, rail passenger traffic ended. Freight traffic between Floh-Seligenthal and Kleinschmalkalden ended on December 31, 1994, on the remainder a year later on January 1, 1996. An attempt by a private railway to continue the traffic at its own expense failed after a few days. A few special trains were still running until the line was closed, and on June 30, 1999 this was history too.
The route was dismantled in 2001/02 and a railway cycle path , the Mommelstein cycle path , was built.
