Momo Djender

Momo Djender ( Mohamed Reda , * 1970 in Algiers ) is a singer , interpreter , composer , presenter and screenwriter of Algerian origin. His style can be assigned to world music, in which he combines oriental music with western jazz and pop music . He sings in Arabic, German, French and English.

biography

In his home country he released his first album 36 Basta Ali in 1990 under his stage name 'Mohamed Reda' , for which he received the "Silver Album Prize" for over 60,000 copies sold, and that for several weeks in the Algerian Top 10 lay. Because of the political situation, especially because of the Algerian civil war , he left his homeland in 1991 and spent three years in Morocco . There he prepared his second album, "Rayha Ouïne", which was released in Algeria in 1994. With the title song he achieved another top ten hit. The album earned Momo Djender the reputation of a "innovator". He is considered to be one of the first musicians in Algeria to modernize traditional music and thus make it accessible to younger people. He coined the name for a new style of music, "Bled Music", from "Bled" (home, country), based on the term "Country Music".

Momo Djender has lived and worked in Berlin since 1994 . There he initially produced with Jocelyn B. Smith , Hussein Kili, Eda Zari, Rachid Bahri and Ramesh B. Weeratunga , among others . He also composed theater music ( Jerusalem Syndrome ) and film music with Rainer Oleak and Sarah Gross for the film Hinter Lassen . He was discovered by Sting through Rhani Krija and accompanied him vocal and instrumental on the promo tour for the album Sacred Love in 2003 . In the same year Momo Djender released his third album Experience , again under his stage name "Mohamed Reda" .

In 2006, jazz musician Klaus Doldinger invited Momo Djender to perform on his album Passport to Morocco . A little later he accompanied Klaus Doldinger and his band Passport on their "Jubilee Tour". In 2006 Momo Djender met the German reggae and soul musician Mellow Mark . Together with Rhani Krija they founded the trio Mellow Maroc .

In 2018 Momo Djender was a guest artist on the album Devachan by the musician Ralph Valenteano .

In addition to his work as a musician and singer, Momo took on an engagement on Algerian television from 2006 to 2011. He was the presenter for the Algerian version of the television game show Fort Boyard (alg. "Bordj El Abtal"). With record ratings, the show was a success in Algeria.

In 2012 he took part in the 2nd season of The Voice of Germany . In spring 2013 Rhani Krija (percussion) and Momo Djender (vocals, guitar) founded the duo "DUOrient". The duo interprets music from the common North African repertoire in a modern form.

He is a father of three.
