Monika Follenius (* 1954 in Landau in the Palatinate ) is a German painter .

Life

She attended the Max Slevogt Gymnasium , where she graduated from high school in 1972. She completed her studies from 1972 to 1975 at the Landau University of Education, today's University of Koblenz-Landau , with the first state examination in mathematics and fine arts. Afterwards she was a teacher at various schools, most recently at the Integrated Comprehensive School in Wörth, where she retired in summer 2019. In between, she took four sabbatical years to have time for her artistic work.

Works

In a review of her works in 2008 in the newspaper Die Rheinpfalz : “Your acrylic painting does everything to avoid the appearance of idyll. The very fact that she always only paints one picture in color and the three or four other pictures in black and white for the landscapes creates a documentary effect. However, this mode of representation cannot be described as cool or even cool in the brash modern sense, rather a melancholy veil lies on the fields, the vines, the Haardt Mountains, the heavy skies. It is as if the artist had painted from old postcards that still show the old undamaged corridors, you feel as if you have been transported to the 1950s. And is relieved to see that there are colored counterpoints between all the gray values: fields of poppy poppies, fields of rapeseed and individual sunflowers that you only discover when you step closer. "

Matthias Brück judged: "That Monika Follenius was rightly characterized as a virtuoso of the idyllic, nobody wants to deny. An artist who has stripped this concept of all negative attributes and in her work an undisguised, unsentimental sense of natural, But mostly a touch of gentle melancholy hovered over her color etchings - like a small, additional corrective - that prevented beauty from becoming a consumable banality. But times like people are changing: the Palatinate and some other regions appeared to this artist simply “colorful enough.” So she switched from the colors to the atmospheric black and white - from the etching to the acrylic technique. The familiar motifs changed little and, as always, the special charm of a landscape becomes a half-ruined one Gate or a hidden nook and cranny, experienced and finally put into the picture nt. "
