Monolithos ( Greek Μονόλιθος ( m. Sg. )) Is a small place in the municipality of Atavyros in the west of the Greek island and municipality of Rhodes . The name means something like "lonely rock" in Greek . The place is best known for its Johanniter fortress .

The Byzantines built a fortress about 1.5 km southwest of today's town, which was expanded by the Johannites in 1467 and restored by Pierre d'Aubusson from 1480 to 1489 . Today the castle, which incidentally was never conquered, serves as a popular photo opportunity and vantage point. Inside the castle walls there is a chapel of St. Pantaleon .
