Monotropastrum is a genus of plants fromthe heather family (Ericaceae). The two species of the genus are native to South Asia.
description
Monotropastrum are chlorophyllless , myco-heterotrophic , herbaceous plants . Their roots are a dense mass, the stem and inflorescence axis growing from them stands nodding and is pure white. The leaves are simple, there are no previous leaves .
The inflorescence is one to few flowers. The flowers are three to five-fold, sepals may be missing and are difficult to distinguish. The crown is tubular, the petals are not fused and more or less sack-shaped at the base. The stamens are as long as the crown, the anthers are horizontally kidney-shaped and slit one or more times at the end. The pair of lobed nectaries stand between the epipetal stamens . The stylus is strong and slender, the time, the scar trumpet shape.
The ovary shows parietal placentation . The fruit is berry-like, the seeds are egg-shaped.
distribution
The genus is found in South Asia from the Indian Punjab via Laos, Vietnam and Korea to the Indonesian Sumatra at altitudes between 1000 and 2700 meters.
Systematics
The genus Monotropastrum was first described by Heinrich Andres in 1935 . A synonym is Eremotropa Andres . The genus includes two types:
- Monotropastrum humile (D.Don) H.Hara : It occurs in Bhutan, India, Sumatra, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Sakhalin, Sikkim, Thailand, Vietnam and in China.
- Monotropastrum sciaphilum (Andres) GDWallace : It is only found in Yunnan .
