The Monte Ferru (translated: Eisenberg ) is the largest, extinct volcanic massif on Sardinia . It consists mainly of iron-rich basalt and trachyte rock . The high iron content gave the mountain its peculiar red color.
The highest peaks in the massif are the bald Monte Urtigu with 1050 m and the Monte Entu with 1024 m. The towers of Monte Su Pertusu (990 m) made of Trachyt are interesting . The humid north and west slopes are covered by holm oak forests. Due to its scenic beauty and the presence of the European yew tree ( Taxus Baccata ), the area was declared a protected area. Because of the griffon vultures ( grifonis ) that occur here , the massif is also known as the Volcano di Griffoni .
On the northern slope of Monte Ferru is the small town of Cuglieri in the province of Oristano , on the eastern slope the town of Santu Lussurgiu with San Leonardo de Siete Fuentes . They are connected by a road whose pass Punta Arancola lies in the Monte Ferru massif at an altitude of 876 m.
