Montgomery Cunningham Meigs (born January 11, 1945 in Annapolis ) is a former general in the United States Army . He was named Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs after his ancestor .

Life and education

Meigs graduated from Holderness School in Holderness , which he graduated in 1965. He then began his studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point , which he successfully left in 1967. He then served in the 9th Infantry Division in the Vietnam War . After studying at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and one year at Army's Command and General Staff College , he taught history at West Point and spent the 1981/82 winter semester at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an International Affairs Fellow at the Institute for Foreign Relations.

Career

Meigs received his doctorate in history in 1982 before he was assigned to Germany as Executive Officer of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment . In 1984 Meigs commanded the 1st Squadron , 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment . After a stay at the National War College as an Army Fellow , he worked for three years as a strategic planner on the Joint Staff in Washington, DC. After returning to Germany on September 26, 1990, he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division in the Desert Storm mission . He then commanded the 7th Army Training Command in Grafenwoehr and served as Chief of Staff of V Corps and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the US Army in the Seventh United States Army . General Meigs first commanded the 3rd Infantry Division from July 1995, then the 1st Infantry Division from February 1996. In October 1996 he was transferred to Bosnia together with the 1st Infantry Division , where he spent nine months in the NATO command of the Multi-National Division ( North) served in Operations Joint Endeavor and Joint Guard .

He commanded the NATO Stabilization Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina from October 23, 1998 to October 1999, simultaneously with his command of the Seventh United States Army . During the bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , Meigs ordered the destruction of part of the Belgrade-Bar railway line on April 3, 1999, which runs over a short section over Bosnian territory. After his active service, Meigs was a professor at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University and served as a military advisor in the Pentagon .

Meigs is currently Visiting Professor of Strategy and Military Operations at Georgetown Universitys School of Foreign Service . In December 2007 he resigned from his position as Director of the US Department of Defense's Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization ( JIEDDO ) . Since January 1, 2010 he has been President and CEO of the Business Executives for National Security (BENS).
