Montrose Royal Infirmary

The Montrose Royal Infirmary is a former hospital in the Scottish town of Montrose in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The hospital was built primarily to care for impoverished patients who previously had to use the Montrose Lunatic Asylum psychiatric hospital . James Collie's design won the public tender . A total of 15 designs were submitted. The foundation stone was laid on June 28, 1838, Queen Victoria's coronation day . The stone work was done by David Mitchell , the installations by John Crieg . In order to enhance the appearance of the building, the Bridge Street passing by was lowered by "a foot or two". In 1866 fever wards were added, which were connected to the main building via a covered corridor. In 1894 a morgue and an elevator were set up in the basement. A grand piano was also added. In April 2018, the hospital operated by the National Health Service , which provided basic services to Montrose and the surrounding area, was closed because the renovations required for modern operation could not be implemented in the outdated architecture. A new hospital opened two days later.
