Moonlight is the title of a hit hit by Ted Herold in 1960, written by Fini Busch (text) and Werner Scharfenberger (music) and which has become an evergreen .

History of origin

Ted Herold was established at Polydor Records to complement Peter Kraus' counterpart . However, he was only allowed to sing what Peter Kraus didn't want or shouldn't sing. His first title Ich need 'kein Ring / Lover Doll (Without You) was written on August 20, 1958 under Bert Kaempfert in Hamburg and has not yet reached the German hit parade . His second single So beautiful is only the very first love (recorded on November 8, 1958) / Wonderful how you kisses again today (November 7, 1958) was already monitored by the successful producer Gerhard Mendelson in Vienna.

The recording of Moonlight was made on April 14, 1960 in Vienna again under production direction by Gerhard Mendelson, the B-side 1: 0 the day before. Unlike the previous titles, which were often cover versions of American rock titles, it was a ballad about loneliness, based on a simple instrumentation by the orchestra of composer Werner Scharfenberger. Herold is accompanied by the girl trio Gloria-Sisters (with Vita Andrea Horn, alias Heidi Prien), led by Stella Jones. The arrangement in the light jazz style came from Hans Salomon , who plays the alto saxophone here.

success

The single Moonlight / 1: 0 (Polydor #NH 24207) was released in May 1960 on the eighth single Ted Herolds. The romantic hit ballade took first place in Germany for one month from August 1, 1960 and was sold over 500,000 times, making the single one of the best-selling German-language hits in the country . According to the magazine "Automaten-Markt", Herold's ballade was ranked sixth among the most played singles in jukeboxes . From July 19, 1960, the youth magazine BRAVO also listed him as the ranger. In the Bravo annual charts in 1960 , Moonlight took third place with 397 points. It remained Herold's most successful song, the only number one hit and also became his signature tune. The title earned him his second golden tuning fork in 1988 .

Cover versions

The song was covered in 1960 for various record labels , including by Bob Gerry & Die Evelyn Sisters with the Werner Thomson Orchestra (LP Das Klingende Schlageralbum 1960 ; Bertelsmann # 31718) and Rockie Jackson (the Viennese Erhard Jungnickl; Moonlight / All girls want to kiss ; Elite Special # 9977).
