Moonshine Kate

Moonshine Kate (born Rosa Lee Carson on October 10, 1909 in Atlanta , Georgia , † 1992 in Bainbridge , Georgia) was an American old-time musician. She owes her name to a song by her father Fiddlin 'John Carson , Moonshine Kate . She is considered the first woman to be successful in country music .

Life

Rosa Lee Carson was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the youngest of nine children. Her father was originally from Fannin County , Georgia . She was already on stage at the age of five. At 14, she mastered the guitar and the banjo perfectly. She had her first appearance on the radio in the early 1920s with her father at WSB in Atlanta.

Rosa Lee made her first recording at the age of 15 with Okeh Records , where her father also made his legendary records. She also toured with him, even to Mexico and Canada . In parallel, she made countless records for OKeh and Bluebird Records with the Virginia Reelers , her and her father's backing band, approximately 170. Two of her best-known tracks are My Man's A Jolly Railroad Man from 1931 and Little Maggy Pharan , which is on the Story of a girl murdered in Atlanta in 1914 . However , she had already adopted the name Moonshine Kate in 1928. After 1931 her successful days were over, only with her father she still recorded titles. In addition, both took part in political campaigns in which they were hired as entertainers. Such an approach was not uncommon in the 1930s and 1940s. Also Gid Tanner practiced similar activities from after the 1934th This fact was also shown in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? picked up. In 1944 Moonshine married Kate Wayne Johnson.

Moonshine Kate died in Bainbridge in 1992 at the age of 83. She and her father were the first artist to be inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame .
