Mor Karbasi ( Hebrew מור קרבסי) (Born April 23, 1986 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli singer and songwriter who often sings her songs in Ladino, the language of the Sephardic Jews.

Life

Her mother is from Nazareth and is of Sephardic - Moroccan descent, while her father is from Jerusalem and has Persian or Iranian ancestry. These shimmering Jewish lines can also be found in her music. She now lives in London with her partner, guitarist Joe Taylor.

One of their main projects is Sephardic music that is performed in Ladino . Ladino is the language of the  Jews who emigrated from Spain in 1492 - in the course of the Reconquista . Mor Karbasi composes songs himself and interprets traditional songs. Their music can be compared to that of Mariza and Yasmin Levy . However, it has a strong, individual sound.

In Mor Karbase's music one can also hear the distinctive influences of both flamenco and fado . Her musical role models are talents like Umm Kulthum , Amália Rodrigues , Madredeus and Mercedes Sosa .

As part of the Klangvokal Music Festival in 2013, she performed with the ensemble My Sweet Canary in domicil , Dortmund, with songs by the Rembetiko singer Roza Eskenazy , as she did a year earlier at the TFF Rudolstadt .
