Winter morning in Vipperow

The morning (mhd. Tomorrow , ahd. Morgan ; actually = shimmer, twilight) is the part of the day between midnight and noon , in the narrower sense the time from sunrise to morning . The Duden describes it as “the time of day around lightning after night; early morning ”. The direction of sunrise, the east , is also referred to as morning (cf. Orient ).

etymology

The word morning for the 'time of day to see the sunrise, start of the day' in Old High German was as morgan detected in the 8th century, resulting in Middle High German and medium neudeutsch tomorrow originated. In English, morn was created in the poetic language , otherwise morning , based on evening, 'Abend'. There are similarities in other Germanic languages, which can be derived from the forms of germ. * Murgina-, * margina-, with different n-suffixes and originally in the sense of 'twilight' possibly from the root ie. * Let 'flicker, sparkle' be derived. Since the 15th century and more often since the 16th century by Luther , morning has also stood for 'east', i.e. for the direction of the sunrise. In both Germany and the Netherlands, the noun develops early (from the 10th century), also to Ackermaß Morgen , based on the idea 'as much land as a team of oxen can plow in one morning'; The adverb tomorrow for 'the following day' developed from the ahd. Morgane , handed down only in ahd. Ubarmorgane (9th century), mhd. Tomorrow (e) , actually 'in the morning', then 'the following morning' the previous night. Eventually it became 'all of the following day'.

Period

Historical encyclopedias define the morning period inconsistently. For example, Pierer's Universal Lexicon of 1860 says:

“1) the next time before or after the sun rises, from dawn to after sunrise, with an indefinite limit, but usually up to 3 hours before noon; 2) the time after 12 noon at night until 12 noon [...] "

Meteorology and biology

From a meteorological point of view, the early morning is usually the coldest time of the day due to its radiation at night. Typical phenomena such as morning fog , dew , frost or frost can therefore also be seen . From the perspective of phenology and behavioral biology , the morning birdsong is also important. (see bird clock )
