Dawn on the Müritz

The reddish color of the eastern sky , which occurs about three quarters to half an hour before sunrise , is referred to as dawn or dawn . Depending on the cloudiness , geographical position and the aerosol content (suspended particles) in the air, it can also be seen later when the sun is not too high . Orange or purple shades are also possible.

Physical explanation

The physical cause of the dawn is the scattering of light in the earth's atmosphere . The molecules of air and water vapor scatter the short-wave blue light more strongly than the red, so that the sky blue is created during the day and the reddish tones predominate near the horizon because of the longer path through the atmosphere. Therefore, sometimes the rise of the full moon redness of the sky to watch. The moonlight is at most 0.01 percent of the sunlight , but when the moon is full it makes the sky bright enough that the eye can see colors.

Dawn in mythology

In ancient Greece, the dawn had its own goddess , whom Homer sang about as "rose-fingered Eos " (ῥοδοδάκτυλος Ἠώς rhododaktylos Ēōs ). In mythology, she is the sister of the sun god Helios and the moon goddess Selene . The task of Eos was to pave the way for her brother Helios to the day sky.

In Roman mythology, Aurora is the goddess of the dawn.

In Christianity, the dawn stands for Jesus' mother Mary. Jesus, on the other hand, is the sun and through this comparison one can see that the dawn (Mary) always depends on the sun (Jesus Christ). In the Advent season, rorata masses in honor of Mary are always celebrated before or during sunrise.

Pawn rule

A farmer's rule says that a pronounced dawn brings bad weather ( dawn, bad weather threatens ). This rule stems from the fact that the weather in Central Europe is mainly determined by the west wind. For a dawn to form, the sky in the east must be clear, while in the west clouds can already appear, driven by the west wind.
