Moritz Karl Graf zu Lynar (born February 14, 1702 in Lübbenau ; † April 24, 1768 ibid) was a German diplomat.

Life

The son of the Electorate Chamberlain and senior councilor Friedrich Casimir zu Lynar and his wife Eva Elisabeth von Windisch-Graetz , completed his studies at the University of Wittenberg , where he matriculated on July 12, 1718. He then became a Saxon diplomat, and in 1734 was the Saxon ambassador in Berlin and St. Petersburg . There he became a lover of the regent and tsar's mother Anna Leopoldowna . In order to hide the relationship from the public, she engaged him to Julie von Mengden , a relative of her army chief Burkhard Christoph von Münnich .

Lynar traveled to Dresden to take his leave and to enter the service of his ruling lover. However, on the trip he heard the news of their fall on December 6th, 1741. Therefore, he stayed in Saxony, where he became a privy councilor and president of the regional government in Niederlausitz. As heir to Lübbenau and Bucko, he took part in the construction of the Nikolaikirche in Lübbenau, where his tomb is also located. Since he remained without an heir, his brother Rochus Friedrich zu Lynar (1708–1781) took over his inheritance.

Lynar married Countess Christiane Friderike Henriette von Flemming on November 17, 1728 (* September 17, 1709, † March 24, 1730), the daughter of Count Joachim Friedrich von Flemming . The magnificent tombs of Moritz Karl and his wife are adorned with coats of arms and are located in the Sankt Nikolai Church in Lübbenau .
