Moritz Steinmetz

Moritz Steinmetz (born April 27, 1529 in Görsbach near Nordhausen in Northern Thuringia, † July 1, 1584 in Leipzig ) was a German scholar of the 16th century.

Life

He was a son of Valentin Steinmetz the Elder. Ä. and Ottilia, née Zigler, his brother was Valentin Steinmetz . In 1540 he became a student at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. In the winter semester 1541/42 he began his studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig . In 1547 he was awarded a bachelor's degree in the fine arts, and in 1550 a master's degree in philosophy. From the summer semester of 1553 he taught as a professor at the University of Leipzig, initially teaching Latin grammar and from the summer semester of 1554 mathematics. In 1556 he became dean of the philosophy faculty. Steinmetz also studied medicine, in 1564 he obtained the Baccalauret here, and in 1577 he was awarded a doctorate in medicine. In addition to his work as a professor at the university, he worked as a pharmacist in Leipzig, he took over the pharmacy of his father-in-law Johann Ralla in 1559/60. In 1580 he became the first prefect of the Leipzig Botanical Garden , an office that his eldest son Johann took over after his death.

With his brother Valentin he observed the Great Comet of 1577 . In 1582 he and his brother wrote a report for the Saxon elector on the calendar reform Gregor XIII on behalf of the University of Leipzig . From 1565 to 1580 he published a calendar, which was then continued by his brother.
