biography

Wesseler, born as the son of the surveyor Jürgen Wesseler, who has been responsible for the cabinet for contemporary art in Bremerhaven since 1967 , studied art history and business administration in Mainz and Paris .

Moritz Wesseler gained his first experience in the field of conception and implementation of exhibitions in Bremerhaven, where from 2003 he regularly held solo exhibitions with artists such as Cathy Wilkes , Martin Boyce, Ceal Floyer , Anri Sala , Manfred Pernice , Luc Tuymans and Gregor Schneider curated.

Together with the curator Mario Kramer and the artist Gregor Schneider, he organized the Double exhibition series at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main from spring 2009 to autumn 2010 . Historical exhibition projects were reconstructed within a room by Gregor Schneider and thus transferred from the past to the present.

As part of his academic traineeship at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen , Wesseler oversaw exhibition projects by Michael Sailstorfer and Kris Martin in the K20 Grabbeplatz, Jordan Wolfson in the Schmela Haus and Tomás Saraceno in the K21 Ständehaus.

Until the summer of 2013, Wesseler worked as the artistic director of Fürstenberg Zeitgenössisch in Donaueschingen and Heiligenberg - an institution that was founded in 2011 by Christian and Jeannette zu Fürstenberg and serves to promote and convey contemporary art. The activities of “Fürstenberg Zeitgenössisch” are divided into the awarding of scholarships, the organization of exhibitions in the “Princely Fürstenberg Collections” in Donaueschingen and the development of a contemporary art collection. At the center of his work for the institution were collaborations with artists such as Dirk Bell, Julian Göthe, Petrit Halilaj, Dorota Jurczak, Gareth Moore or João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva.

In addition to his work as a curator, Moritz Wesseler published regularly on contemporary art.

On May 21, 2013, Wesseler was appointed as the new director by the board of the Kölnischer Kunstverein with the support of a selection committee, and on July 1, 2013, he took up his position as the successor to Søren Grammel . Since November 1, 2018, Wesseler has been director of the Fridericianum in Kassel.
