Moritz's monument under the Hasenberg 1591

The Moritzmonument is a sandstone monument on the outer wall of the Maiden Bastion in Dresden . It is located at the northeast corner of the Dresden fortifications or at the eastern end of the Brühl Terrace , corner of Terrassenufer / Hasenberg (Augustusallee). The monument is 6 meters high and 3 meters wide. It was created in 1555 by Hans Walther . The Moritzmonument is the oldest preserved monument in Dresden.

It shows Elector Moritz handing over the Saxon Kurschwert to his brother August . Behind Moritz stands death with an hourglass in hand. Her wives are depicted with coats of arms next to the two electors - Agnes of Hesse and Anna of Denmark . Agnes wears widow costume and Anna wears fashionable court clothes. The historical background to the depiction is that Moritz was fatally wounded in the battle of Sievershausen in 1553 . Since he had no offspring, the electoral dignity passed to his younger brother August.

At the time of Moritz's death, the Dresden fortifications were expanded. The Moritzmonument was originally placed on the site of the fortress, which shows the progress of the construction work at the time of his death. This was at the top of the Hasenberg Bastion . The Moritzmonument was restored and moved in 1818 and 1871 until it was erected in its current location in 1895.

In 2000 the Moritz monument was replaced by a copy. The original was then placed in the casemates under the Brühlsche Terrasse, the Museum fortress Dresden . As a result of the Elbe flood in 2013, the monument was recovered from the fortress and preserved. Since 2017, it has been part of a new permanent exhibition in the Kurfürstensaal of the Dresden Residenzschloss.
