Moriz Gelinek
Moriz Gelinek (born April 30, 1887 in Hallein ; † January 24, 1979 ) was an Austrian railway pioneer. He pursued the idea of gasoline or diesel-electric power transmission in locomotives . The first locomotive was intended for use in the Lamprechtshausen -Bürmoos peat factory in the early 1920s .
He received general fame and several awards for the construction and sale of locomotives with the diesel-electric GEBUS drive he developed . His patents achieved worldwide recognition. In the early 1960s, the flagship of the German Federal Railroad was the “ Flying Hamburger ”, a vehicle that Gelinek helped to develop. In 1977, the year of his 90th birthday, Gelinek was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
Some locomotives produced by GEBUS were still in use in isolated cases in the 1990s.
