Morton Edward Gurtin (born March 7, 1934 in Jersey City , New Jersey ) is an American engineer specializing in mechanics and materials science.

Gurtin studied mechanical engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor's degree in 1955 and received his doctorate in applied mathematics ( Some Theorems In The Linear Theory Of Elasticity ) from Brown University under Eli Sternberg in 1961 . Before that he was an engineer at Douglas Aircraft in 1955/56 and at General Electric from 1956 to 1959 . In 1962 he became an assistant professor and later an associate professor at Brown University and from 1966 he was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University .

He was visiting professor in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Poitiers, Paris, Istanbul, Pisa, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City and at Simon Fraser University, among others, and was an advisor to Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories . In 1974 he was a Guggenheim Fellow .

He dealt with the fundamentals of nonlinear continuum mechanics and thermodynamics following the investigations of Clifford Truesdell and Walter Noll , using mathematical methods, for example from the theory of dynamic systems and geometric dimension theory. From the 1980s onwards he dealt with the dynamics of phase transitions, fracture dynamics, crystalline plasticity, diffusion at the atomic level and micromechanics, introducing non-classical macroscopic forces that result from configurations, for example the kinetics of phase boundaries, or from microscopic description .

In 2004 he received the Tymoshenko Medal . In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from La Sapienza University in Rome . In 2001 he received the Cataldo e Angiola Angostinelli Prize from the Accademia dei Lincei .
