Mortuary is a Mexican death and thrash metal band from Monterrey that was formed in 1988, split up in 1997 and reunited in 2008.

history

The band was formed in 1986 by singer and bassist Joel Alanis and drummer Joel Leal, initially covering songs by Black Sabbath , Slayer , Iron Maiden and Venom . At the same time, the guitarists Alberto Martínez and Pedro Guevara also had a cover band, so that in late 1987 they formed a band. In 1988, Where Death Takes Your Soul was followed by a first demo. The success of the demo allowed the group to play alongside bands like Obituary and Sepultura . In the same year guitarist Pedro Guevara left the band. In 1990 the band recorded their debut album Blackened Images , which was released in 1991 in the US on JL America , in Europe and Asia on Avanzada Metalica and in Germany on Turbo Records . In 1991 the band also opened for Morbid Angel in Texas . In the same year Joel Leal left the band and was replaced by drummer Peter Gonzales. In 1992, a French label released the album again as a special edition without the band's approval. The band also held a tour that included 20 gigs, along with Inquisidor and Transmetal . In 1993 further appearances followed, as well as the recording of a demo, which however remained unpublished. In 1993 Peter Gonzales left the band, so Joel Leal returned to the band. The group also recorded their next album, Shine of the End , and opened up for Slayer. The album was released in 1985 via Maraga Art . In 1995 and 1996 the band worked on new songs and continued playing concerts before the group split up in 1997.

In 2005 the band got back together to work on a Slayer tribute album. In 2007 Utterly Somber Creations released the demo Where Death Takes Your Soul again before the band reunited in 2008. In 2009 the first gigs followed since the reunification and the band worked on new songs. In 2010 and 2011 further gigs followed, with the band having problems with the post of drummer, so Sergio Pequeño came to the band as the new drummer. The band also played a gig with Destruction in Monterrey.

style

The band cites Slayer , Possessed , and “classical twisted music” as musical influences , as lyrical life, the dark side, own experiences and Friedrich Nietzsche . Accordingly, their music has been compared with Slayer during Hell Awaits times and Possessed, but also with Kreator's Pleasure to Kill era, the early work of Necrophobic and Sepultura at the time of their debut album Morbid Visions .
