The Moruya River is a river in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .

geography

The Moruya River is a short saltwater estuary that is fed by the Deua River . The town of Moruya is located on the river about ten kilometers from the coast. The river used to be navigable as far as Moruya and was navigated by the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company .

The Princes Highway crosses the river in Moruya. The first bridge was built in 1876. Due to frequent flooding, new bridges had to be built in 1900, 1945 and 1966.

The small town of Moruya Heads is located at the mouth of the river .

threshold

The river had a threshold at its confluence with the Tasman Sea . The threshold was dangerous for shipping and because of a number of dangers for smaller ships and because it was an obstacle to the entry of large ships, the first important settlement was in the Broulee area further north on the coast. In 1841 a flood washed away the threshold and the town of Moruya, now freely accessible, developed at Broulee's expense, although problems with the threshold continued later. After all, Moruya granted the easiest access to the Araluen gold fields on the Deua River from the 1850s .

The Benandra , a wooden steamship of the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company for the transport of goods, was lost on March 25, 1924 when it ran aground on a sandbank near the old rock threshold. At least one seaman was killed.

The threshold has now been defused by a rock breakwater on the north side of the river.
