Moses "Moritz, Moschkatz" Häusler (born July 20, 1901 in Vienna ; † December 24, 1952 there ) was an Austrian national soccer player .

Career

The striker made his first football experiences in the youth teams of lower-class Viennese clubs such as Armania and Romania . In 1918 he moved to the then second-class SC Hakoah Vienna . There he was able to work his way up from the reserve team and was already part of the regular formation in the 1919/20 season, when the Hakoah made it to the top division. Häusler was feared for his sharp shot and his wealth of tricks and complemented himself well with Alexander Neufeld on the right attacking side .

The team was able to establish itself in the first class straight away and after a fourth place in the debut season, a fight for the championship followed in the second year, which was only lost on the last match day against the Vienna sports club . After professional football was introduced in Austria in the 1924/25 season, the Hakoah finally succeeded in winning the championship. Häusler was the only player who was on the pitch in all championship games and, together with Max Grünwald, was also the team's most successful goalscorer.

His achievements in the club led in August 1923 to the first call-up to the Austrian national football team , where he made his debut in a 2-1 win against Finland . In his second international match against Romania , he scored the first goal in the national dress. In total, Häusler played seven games for Austria and scored two goals. He is also the record player for the Hakoah. He made his last game in November 1925 against Switzerland .

In the spring of 1926 the Hakoah undertook an American tour, which was a great success with the public and led to a number of Hakoah players - including Häusler - being offered contracts by US clubs. He returned with the team to Vienna and played the championship to the end, but then informed the club of his intended change and traveled to New York to play in the future for the New York Giants in the ASL.

His former club colleagues Max Grünwald, Béla Guttmann , Ernö Schwarz and Egon Pollak also switched to the Giants . Häusler played two seasons with the Giants, but when the soccer war broke out at the beginning of the third season and the league split, he moved to the newly founded New York Hakoah in the ESL. In this club, the former players of the Vienna Hakaoh who had previously worked for various US clubs came together again. In 1929 Häusler won the US Open Cup with the New York Hakoah , where he scored a goal in the final second leg against St. Louis Madison Kennels , and stayed with the club after the merger of ESL and ASL. Then he moved to the New York Americans founded by Ernö Schwarz , with whom he again reached the final of the US Open Cup in 1933.

After Häusler had occasionally played again for the Wiener Hakoah between the US seasons, he returned in 1933 and played one last season in Vienna. He then worked as a trainer in Poland at Garbarnia Krakow . When, however, after his return to Vienna in October 1936 the Hakoah suffered from significant player failures, he laced his football boots one last time and achieved a 3-1 with the team against FK Austria Wien .

His further coaching activities took him to the Baltic States and Luxembourg. He returned to Vienna in the early 1950s and ran a coffee house until his death.
