Moses Schnirer ( Dr. Moritz Tobias Schnirer , occasionally also: Tobias Moritz Schnirer ; born September 23, 1860 in Bucharest , † March 15, 1941 in Vienna ) was a Zionist before Theodor Herzl.

Life

Moses Schnirer lived in Vienna from 1880 and practiced as a doctor there.

Schnirer was a co-founder of the Jewish student union Kadimah and the Vienna “Zions” society (from 1893 chairman of the Zion Association of Austrian Colonization Associations). 1889-1893 he was president of the Vienna Palestine Colonization Association Admath Jeschurun . Since the first Zionist congress (Basel 1897) he was a vice-president of the "narrow action committee" and was elected to the commission for practical colonization during the first congress (with Willy Bambus , Armand Kaminka , Alexander Mintz and Schlomo Ben Zion Rubenstein).

In 1898, Moses Schnirer took part in Herzl's Palestine trip to see Kaiser Wilhelm II . In 1905 he was on the Austrian-Zionist regional committee; In 1905 and 1906 he participated intensively in the strivings for autonomy of the Austrian Zionists, then he was soon ousted by the younger Zionists who followed him.

In 1941, Moses Schnirer and his wife committed suicide.
