Moses ibn Tibbon

Moses ben Samuel ibn Tibbon (* around 1200; † around 1283) was a 13th century Jewish translator from the Ibn Tibbon family .

Life

He was born as the son of Samuel ibn Tibbon in Marseille and translated numerous works from the fields of philosophy, medicine, astronomy and mathematics from Arabic into Hebrew . His philosophical transmissions include works by al-Farabi , the commentary by Tabrisi on the 25 propositions as an introduction to Part II of the Leader of the Undecided by Maimonides as well as the works of Aristotle with commentaries by Averroes such as De Sensu et Sensato and De Generatione et Corruptione . He also transmitted works by Euclid , Hunayn ibn Ishaq and Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya ar-Razi , and wrote a commentary on the Pentateuch and on the Song of Songs . In the latter work he follows the medieval interpretation and understands the book as an allegory of the relationships between man and his soul.
